Ignition for classic mopeds

The ignition or alternator generates the spark that makes the engine run. The right configuration is more than just maintenance: it ensures reliable starting, stable lighting, correct power supply, and smooth engine performance. From original alternators (electronic or contact ignition) to racing ignitions, you will find parts from many well-known brands in our shop, such as MVT, Italkit, Malossi, Polini, as well as PVL. We also carry spare parts and conversion kits.

Ignition components and their function

The ignition consists of a few central components. In the event of a defect, usually only one component is affected. Once you identify and replace the faulty part, the vehicle will run again. In our ignition category, you will find a large selection of spare parts and accessories for maintenance, repair, or optimization/tuning.

  • Rotor (Flywheel): Rotates with the engine and creates the magnetic field so that the stator can generate electricity.
  • Stator: The coil pack that, together with the rotor, generates the current for the ignition and, if applicable, battery charging.
  • Pick-up: Found in electronic ignitions with CDI; it detects the crankshaft position and provides the signal for the ignition timing. Not present in breaker/contact ignitions.
  • CDI: Electronic module that processes the signal and delivers high voltage to the ignition coil. Available as AC or DC, with fixed, variable, or programmable ignition timing.
  • Breaker (Contact): Mechanical switch in classic moped ignitions. It opens and closes the primary circuit to generate the spark. Requires a matching capacitor and regular maintenance.
  • Ignition coil: Amplifies the signal for a powerful ignition spark.
  • Spark plug connector and cable: Conduct the high voltage from the coil to the spark plug.
  • Spark plug: Ignites the air-fuel mixture and starts the engine.
  • Regulator (AC) / Regulator-Rectifier (DC): In an AC circuit, the regulator limits the voltage to protect the lighting. In a DC system, the regulator-rectifier converts and stabilizes the voltage to approximately 12 V DC. Important for 12 V conversions and for protecting electrical components.
  • Kill switch / Emergency stop switch: Interrupts the power immediately and serves as a safety feature.

Comparison: Ignitions for vintage mopeds

→ Breaker ignition / Contact ignition / Points ignition

Older vehicles do not have electronic ignition but use breakers / points and capacitors instead. Performance and reliability are limited, and the settings must be checked regularly, but the system has a simple design.

These ignitions often deliver only 6 V. Therefore, the lighting and instruments must match this or be adapted when converting to 12 V.

Note: Use breakers according to original specifications and a matching capacitor. Converting to an electronic ignition reduces maintenance and increases reliability.

→ Electronic ignition

Relatively heavy and tuned for stock engines. It does not rev up as quickly and is not designed for very high RPMs. However, it provides a stable spark for everyday use, a constant power supply for lighting and instruments, and is considered reliable and durable.

Usually used in conjunction with 12 V systems.

Recommendations: Motoforce, Standard Parts, Original parts (OEM).

→ Internal rotor racing ignition

Here, the rotor is lightweight, allowing for rapid increases in RPM. The tuning is designed for high revs, and some systems offer a variable ignition curve. Some systems also provide 12 V for lighting and instruments.

Recommendations: Stage6 MK2, MVT Digital Direct / Premium, Italkit Selettra.

Some internal rotor ignitions offer a 12 V output for lights, combining racing performance with street use. Depending on the RPM and design, the output is usually between 30 and 80 W. In some cases, stabilization via a battery or capacitor is possible.

Other ignition components: Spark plug, CDI, etc.

The ignition consists of several components and has a significant impact on performance. Often, replacing individual parts is enough to restore functionality.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about ignitions

→ Does the entire ignition need to be replaced?
Often that's not necessary. Frequently, replacing the CDI, ignition coil, connector, or spark plug is sufficient. Check step by step.

→ Which ignition is the right one for me?
For everyday use and close-to-original restoration: standard ignition. For tuned engines or racing: internal rotor ignition with variable or programmable CDI. For use with lighting, choose a system with a 12 V output.

→ What needs to be changed when converting from 6 V to 12 V?
Lights and turn signals, horn, flasher relay, and voltage-sensitive components. The stator and regulator must be compatible and correctly connected.
