Scooter CVT

A scooter's CVT operates with three main components: the variator (front pulley), the drive belt, and the torque driver (rear pulley).

As an evolution of the drive systems found on mopeds, this system is more sophisticated and powerful. Naturally, it must be perfectly tuned to ensure optimal power transfer to the rear wheel.

Together with the centrifugal clutch, the CVT forms a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that provides smooth acceleration without shifting jolts.

How a Scooter CVT Works:

Variator:

A variator allows the gear ratio to be adjusted automatically and variably based on engine speed. Although systems differ in detail, the principle remains the same:

  • The variator is mounted directly on the crankshaft, meaning it rotates at the same speed as the engine.
  • It consists of a fixed and a movable pulley, with the drive belt running in between. These pulleys are conically shaped.
  • The movable part contains variator weights: small cylindrical components or rollers that are pushed outward by centrifugal force, thereby moving the pulley.
  • Since the drive belt is wedged between the two conical pulleys, it is forced to slide upward. This changes the gear ratio and the speed of the driven parts (similar to a sprocket on a motorcycle: the larger it is, the higher the top speed).

Note: Heavier weights cause the variator to open more slowly, while lighter weights make it open faster. Adjusting the CVT weights is essential after any modifications that affect engine power to achieve proper power delivery.

Drive Belt:

The belt simply provides the connection between the variator at the front and the torque driver at the rear. It slides from the inside to the outside on the variator pulleys to vary the speed.

This raises a question: if the belt rises higher on the variator, doesn't it become too short? How is this length compensated for? You will find the answer here ↓

Torque Driver (Rear Pulley):

To compensate for the movement of the belt and the required length, manufacturers install a torque driver. This is the rear counterpart to the front variator unit, which, like the variator, features a fixed and a movable pulley. During acceleration, the drive belt pushes the pulleys apart to move inward. When letting off the throttle, the torque spring pushes the movable pulley back together so the drive belt can return to its starting position.

Sport and Racing CVT: Optimized Ramp Angles and Larger Diameter

To adapt the gear ratio to the power of the respective engine, manufacturers have optimized the variator elements as much as possible: different weights, various torque spring strengths, different roller diameters, and ramp angles. As you can see, the possibilities are very diverse.

Sport CVT: Standard

Whether you choose a sport cylinder or stay with the original 50cc, a sport variator with a standard diameter is usually sufficient. The optimized ramps are perfectly adequate for bringing moderate power increases to the road.

Racing CVT: Oversize

When a scooter engine is more heavily tuned, for example with a racing or high-end cylinder from 70cc upward, the working range of the standard variator often becomes too small. The engine then has significantly more torque and power, which can only be fully utilized with the help of pulleys with an increased diameter (oversize).

This results in both better acceleration and a higher top speed.

All well-known racing brands offer such systems: Stage6 R/T Oversize, Malossi Overrange, Polini Evolution, etc.

ATTENTION: Only a sufficiently powerful engine will work correctly with this type of variator, so stay away from oversize CVTs for standard setups!
