Scooter cylinders

Scooters are often equipped with 2-stroke engines. Our focus is on these, since on 4-stroke engines it is not the cylinder but the cylinder head that has the greatest impact on performance. On a 2-stroke engine, the cylinder itself is the key component. This is where the air-fuel mixture is converted into energy. Power, torque, acceleration, and reliability all depend directly on it. Choosing the right cylinder kit - material, displacement, port timing, or piston type - has the greatest influence on performance and engine characteristics.

In our online shop, cylinders are available for all types of projects.

Below is a guide to help with the right selection.

Finding the right cylinder

In our online shop, four categories are defined to classify cylinders according to performance: Original, Sport, Racing, and High-End.

⇒ Original / OEM quality: Matches factory specifications. High reliability, low consumption, and minimal maintenance. No performance increase, but compliant with manufacturer specifications.

⇒ Sport: The simple design of the original cylinder is retained, with more dynamic performance. Provides increased performance while maintaining high reliability and limited maintenance requirements. Includes 50cc, 70cc, and larger cylinder kits.

⇒ Racing: For competition and very high-performance setups. Designed for maximum power and torque. Only a few stock components can be retained, and extensive tuning is required.

⇒ High-End: For experienced tuners. Installation requires extensive modifications to the crankcase for cylinder base, crankshaft, and other components. Very large displacements and correspondingly high performance.

With this classification, the parts to combine with the cylinder can be selected (exhaust, crankshaft, carburetor, etc.). These should belong to the same category to ensure performance and reliability.

A wide range of cylinders is available for the most popular scooters: Yamaha Aerox, Piaggio TPH, Peugeot Ludix and Speedfight, Malaguti F12, SYM Orbit, Kymco Like as well as many other models.

Ready-to-install cylinder kits

With a few exceptions, cylinder kits are supplied complete with all parts required for installation:

  • Cylinder head if required
  • Piston and piston rings
  • Piston pin and circlips
  • Gasket set (cylinder head, base gasket, exhaust)

All spare parts are also available individually for targeted repairs.

Tuning and maintenance of scooters

For restorations and tuning projects, well-known brands are available such as Stage6 R/T, Stage6, 2Fast, Polini, Malossi, Top Performance, Bidalot or Motoforce for cost-effective and reliable repairs.

Scooter tuning

When tuning a 2-stroke scooter, several components must be combined depending on the objective.

The cylinder is the central element of the setup. Depending on the variant (shape of the transfer ports, displacement, compression), a matching exhaust and a carburetor with the appropriate diameter should be selected. A reinforced crankshaft is also necessary. Only a well-matched setup ensures maximum performance and reliability.

Notes and examples:
  • Original 50cc: OEM cylinder with approved parts (OEM-quality exhaust, original carburetor)
  • Sport: Carburetor 17.5-21 mm, sport exhaust (e.g. Yasuni Z, Stage6 Streetrace, Tecnigas Next-R). The stock crankshaft can be used for 50cc, but a reinforced version is recommended. A sport variator improves acceleration.
  • Racing: Larger carburetor (19-32 mm depending on displacement) and a racing exhaust such as Stage6 R1200/R1400, Yasuni R, or Malossi MHR. A reinforced crankshaft is required, and either a sport or oversize variator should be used.
  • High-End: Carburetor 24-38 mm and high-end exhaust systems such as Stage6 R/T or 2Fast. Reinforced crankshaft and oversize variator are required to handle the loads and full RPM range.

⇒ Important:

Aluminum cylinders must be installed while respecting the squish clearance, i.e. the distance between piston and cylinder head at top dead center, according to manufacturer specifications for optimal reliability.

For racing and high-end racing engines, replacing the complete piston is recommended rather than only the piston rings.

The choice of oil for the mixture should match the intended use: street, track, off-road.

The carburetor diameter serves as a guideline and must be adapted to displacement and cylinder category. A 50cc racing cylinder, for example, does not require as large a carburetor as an 88cc sport cylinder.

For the exhaust, besides the category, the correct volume is also essential. A 50cc racing cylinder will not work properly with a racing exhaust designed for 80cc.

ATTENTION! Any upgrade requires carburetor adjustment with jets! Without proper adjustment, damage may occur.

FAQ — Frequently asked questions about scooter cylinders

⇒ When should the piston be replaced?

If the engine starts poorly or loses power, it is time. Service life depends on the cylinder type. With an OEM cylinder, around 10,000 km is possible; at higher RPM and intensive use, the interval can drop to around 10 hours for racing engines.

⇒ 1-ring piston or 2-ring piston?

It depends on the objective: maximum performance → single-ring piston. Reliable compromise: two-ring piston. Many cylinders also achieve very good performance with two rings.

⇒ Aluminum or cast iron?

Cast iron is generally less sensitive to temperature changes than aluminum and is therefore suitable for daily use. Aluminum is suitable for racing use, as it dissipates heat better and allows consistent performance, but requires precise tuning.
