Scooter Crankshafts: Reliability and Performance

The cranktrain primarily refers to the crankshaft, crankshaft bearings, and oil seals. In our online shop, this category also includes piston pin bearings (small end bearings) as well as matching spare parts and accessories.

The crankshaft and its components require special attention regarding performance and reliability.

All components are available for the most popular models (Yamaha Aerox and Jog R, Piaggio Zip, NRG and Typhoon, Peugeot Kisbee and TKR, etc.) with engines from Minarelli, Piaggio, Peugeot, Kymco, Morini, or GY6.

Crankshaft

The crankshaft is the central component of the cranktrain. It must always match the cylinder: the more powerful the cylinder, the more robust the crankshaft should be. Depending on the setup, it is also important to ensure that the stroke and connecting rod length are compatible, as effective engine tuning is precision work.

To make selection easier, we have divided cylinders and crankshafts into performance levels: Original, Sport, Racing, and High-End.

We offer crankshafts from renowned brands such as Stage6, Stage6 R/T, Motoforce, Malossi, Polini, 2Fast, and many others.

Crankshaft Bearings and Oil Seals

Even in stock engines, it is usually not the crankshaft itself that wears out, but rather the bearings and oil seals. These should be replaced regularly, not only in tuned engines but also in original setups.

For tuned engines, reinforced bearings are explicitly recommended.

Our range includes brands such as Stage6 R/T, SKF, Polini, and Motoforce.

small end Bearings and Accessories

The small end bearing (needle bearing) is usually replaced together with the piston. However, since it sits on the connecting rod and its size also depends on it, it is assigned to the crankshaft category.

Warning: Always check for the correct size! Some cylinder kits use larger piston pins than the original.

Accessories include replacement connecting rods, woodruff keys (standard or offset for adjusting ignition timing), shims, and other specific components.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Crankshafts

→ Do I need to replace the crankshaft when increasing displacement? Yes. Original crankshafts are generally not designed for higher torque and increased RPM and should be replaced with a reinforced or racing version.

→ Can I replace the crankshaft myself? This is a demanding task that requires special tools. Without experience, it is recommended to leave this task to a professional to avoid damage. If you want to do it yourself, follow the workshop manual closely or use appropriate guides / tutorials.
Note: The same special tools are required for changing bearings and oil seals.

→ How do I recognize worn bearings? Strong, unusual vibrations throughout the vehicle are a typical sign. Often, a grinding or rumbling noise can be heard while the engine is running.

→ How do I recognize defective oil seals? Leaking oil seals allow false air into the engine, leading to a lean mixture. Typical symptoms include unstable idling, poor engine performance, and a light-colored / whitish spark plug.
