The clutch – central element of the scooter drivetrain

How a scooter clutch works

As on motorcyles with manual transmission, the clutch is used to disengage or engage the engine and drivetrain. The difference is that on a scooter, the clutch operates as a centrifugal clutch and engages automatically at a certain RPM.
Several components work together: the crankshaft drives the variator / front pulley, which moves the V-belt and the torque driver / rear pulley, on which the clutch is mounted. The centrifugal clutch is equipped with clutch shoes that are held closed by springs. As RPM increases, centrifugal force rises, the shoes open and engage the clutch bell. This drives the transmission and rear wheel. No direct clutch actuation by the rider is required.

Scooter clutch and tuning

As with all engine upgrades, the clutch must also be matched to the setup on a scooter. This is not only about durability and slip, but also about the correct engagement point. A centrifugal clutch can be easily tuned.
The stiffness of the clutch springs directly affects the RPM at which the clutch engages. After tuning upgrades with higher RPM, changing the springs is often recommended.

Recommendations:

Depending on the setup, it is not always necessary to replace the entire clutch. However, adjustment is usually required.

  • When switching from a stock exhaust to a performance exhaust, stiffer clutch springs are recommended.
  • If the scooter is equipped with a higher-performance cylinder, a reinforced clutch is recommended. It is more durable and reduces slipping.

  • For a true racing setup with lots of power in a narrow RPM range, a reinforced clutch with multiple adjustment options should be used, for example for spring tension or weights.

The clutch bell also plays an important role. As engine performance increases, more heat is generated. We ecommend using a suitable and preferably ventilated clutch bell.
