Moped cylinders

Every builder has their own philosophy. Some are purists who want to restore a moped exactly as it left the factory. Others are chasing the feeling of their first bike and rebuild it with the same period tuning parts they ran back then. And then there are the racers who go all in for vintage moped racing, with 75cc kits, a proper expansion chamber exhaust, or even a full-on G1, G2, G3, or G4 race motor.

In our online shop, cylinders are available for all types of projects.

Below is a guide to help with the right selection.

Finding the right cylinder

In our online shop, we defined three categories to classify cylinders according to performance: Original, Sport, and Racing.

⇒ Original / OEM quality cylinder: As the name suggests, these cylinders match factory specifications. High reliability, low consumption, and minimal maintenance. No performance increase, but in line with manufacturer specifications.

⇒ Sport cylinder: The simple design of the original cylinder is retained, with more dynamic performance. Offers increased performance while maintaining high reliability and low maintenance. Available as 50cc, 65cc, 75cc cylinders and more.

⇒ Racing cylinder: For competition and very high-performance setups. Designed for maximum power and torque. Only a few standard components can be retained, and extensive tuning work is required.

This classification helps select the parts to combine with the cylinder (exhaust, crankshaft, carburetor, etc.). Components should belong to the same category to ensure performance and reliability.

A wide range of cylinders is available for the most popular classic mopeds: Piaggio Ciao, Derbi Variant, Puch Maxi, Tomos, Honda Camino, Peugeot 103 and many others.

Ready-to-install cylinder kits

With a few exceptions, cylinder kits are supplied complete with all parts required for installation:

  • Cylinder head (if required)
  • Piston and piston rings
  • Piston pin and piston clips
  • Gasket set (cylinder head, base gasket, exhaust)

All spare parts are also available individually for targeted repairs.

Restoration and tuning of vintage mopeds

For restorations and tuning projects, well-known brands are available such as Stage6, Polini, Malossi, Airsal, Italkit (for increased performance) or Motoforce (for reliable restorations at lower cost).

Classic moped tuning

When tuning an old moped, as with any 2-stroke engine, several components must be matched and combined depending on the goal.

The cylinder is the central element of any setup. Depending on the configuration (shape of the transfer ports, displacement, compression), an exhaust with the appropriate volume and a carburetor with a larger (or smaller) diameter should be selected. A reinforced crankshaft is also required. A well-matched setup provides both performance and reliability.

Some notes and examples:
  • Standard 50 cc: OEM cylinder with approved parts (OEM-style exhaust, original carburetor)
  • Sport: Carburetor 15–28 mm (SHA or PHBG) and a sport exhaust provide more torque. A reinforced crankshaft increases reliability. A sport variator improves acceleration.
  • Racing: Carburetor 19–36mm, racing exhaust such as Stage6 Streetrace or Malossi Too Bad. Reinforced crankshaft and reinforced clutch are required.

Note: Displacement and RPM determine carburetor size and exhaust choice. A 50cc racing cylinder, for example, does not require the same carburetor as a 110cc sport cylinder.

ATTENTION! Any upgrade, even a minor one, requires carburetor adjustment with jets. Otherwise, engine damage is likely.

FAQ — Frequently asked questions about moped cylinders

⇒ When should the piston be replaced?

If the engine starts poorly or loses power, it is time. However, service life depends on the cylinder type. With an OEM cylinder, around 10,000 km is easily possible, but the higher the RPM and the more intensive the use, the shorter the interval. For a racing engine, it can drop to around 10 hours.

⇒ 1-ring piston or 2-ring piston?

It depends on the goal: maximum performance → single-ring piston. Reliable compromise: two-ring piston. However, this rule is not strict. Some cylinders also deliver very strong performance with two rings.

⇒ Should I get a cylinder kit with or without cylinder head?

This depends on several factors: first, the compatibility with the selected cylinder. Some can be used with the original cylinder head. Others require a specific cylinder head, which has an important influence on performance or even functionality. It also depends on the condition of the currently installed cylinder head.
