Air filters: clean air for maximum performance

The air filter ensures that the engine draws in clean air, as the entry of foreign objects seriously compromises reliability. Regardless of the vehicle type, clean air is an indispensable requirement. Furthermore, an overly restricted airflow harms performance. This is why manufacturers and tuners often optimize the filter system to achieve the best compromise between flow and filtration.

Optimized performance with open air filters

Racing, Sport, or Original?

In general, the air volume must be increased as engine performance or displacement increases.

For 50cc motorcycles and scooters, the original airbox is designed for limited power only. Therefore, for larger cylinder kits, it is recommended to use a racing air filter that attaches directly to the carburetor, or a larger airbox such as kart-style airboxes.
If you do not increase the displacement, you can still improve filtration by replacing the original air filter with a pod air filter, usually made of dual-layer foam with two different densities.
For motocross, enduro, or general off-road use, it is better to keep a closed airbox, as these machines are used in extreme conditions like dust or mud. The filter should therefore be protected as much as possible against splash water, mud, and dust. Usually, the volume of the original airbox is sufficient for these engines, but the airflow can be further improved using Powerflow kits from brands like Twin Air or perforated airbox covers.

Important note: If you upgrade from a standard air filter element in the airbox to an open air filter, you must readjust your carburetor with different jets.

Air filter maintenance

Improving airflow does little good if you do not take the time to maintain your equipment. It is important to clean or replace the air filter as often as necessary, which also applies to vehicles that have not been tuned.

For motorcycles and scooters with an original airbox, you can find the maintenance intervals in the owner's manual.
With intensive use or a filter upgrade, you should be even more vigilant and regularly check the condition of your filter. A dirty filter cannot provide adequate airflow, which leads to a loss of performance.

For off-road use, you should check the condition of the air filter after every ride. On a very dusty motocross day, it is even sensible to have a spare filter ready for a mid-day swap.

It is best to use special air filter cleaner and an air filter oil that protects the foam from water and fine particles.
