50CC Manual Bike exhaust: performance, sound and style

The exhaust is far more than just a component; it fundamentally shapes the character of a 50cc machine. On a 2-stroke engine, even more than on a 4-stroke, its design affects not only exhaust flow but also resonance, torque, and overall power delivery. On 50cc motorcycles with AM6 or Derbi engines, a well-chosen exhaust significantly alters both torque characteristics and peak power in every gear. Whether for city riding, off-road, or track use, there is a suitable exhaust for every purpose.

Why change the exhaust on a 50cc 2T motorbike?

  • Derestriction: The stock exhaust often restrcites the engine so that it cannot go faster than 45 km/h.
  • More power: Shape and volume directly influence torque and peak power.
  • Exhaust flow: The exhaust volume must match the engine displacement, as it contributes directly to cooling.
  • Volume: Homologated and quiet for road use, or unrestricted for racing.
  • Appearance: Finish, material, Supermoto / Enduro design - everything can be customized.

Exhaust types by application

  • Original / OEM replica exhaust: Ideal for everyday use. Quiet, visually discreet, and low maintenance. Examples: Tecnigas exhausts or original manufacturer systems.
  • Sport exhaust: Improves acceleration and top speed, with a sportier sound and design. Often used for derestricting engines or with 50 - 70cc sport cylinders. Examples: Stage6 Streetrace, Yasuni Cross ML, Voca Cross, Leovince X-Fight.
  • Racing exhaust: Designed for racing cylinders. Operates at higher RPMs and is intended for use in competitions. The correct volume must be chosen according to displacement. Examples: Stage6 Streetrace 70, Voca Rookie, SCR Corse, Polini Evo.
  • High-end exhaust: For high-performance cylinders, improving performance across the entire rev range. For engines 85cc and higher and exclusively for racing. Examples: Stage6 R/T, Bidalot, 2Fast, KRM Pro Ride.
Note: Only exhausts with an E-mark or engraved homologation number are road-legal. All others are strictly for racing use.

High-mount or low-mount exhaust?

→ High-mount exhaust: Mandatory for offroad and enduro, preserves the typical look of supermoto / enduro bikes.

→ Low-mount exhaust: Often found on sports bikes (RS/TZR/GPR) with fairing. Their more basic shape with fewer bends sometimes favors performance, which is preferred by racers, but is more exposed to impacts.

Complete kits: exhaust + Cylinder + carburetor

A new exhaust only reaches its full potential when paired with matching components such as cylinder and intake system. Changing the exhaust usually requires carburetor adjustment. Without proper tuning, the engine can run lean or overheat.

Recommended setups by performance level:

⇒ OEM 50cc: carburetor 12-19 mm, original intake. Stock cylinder and crankshaft, ideal for everyday use.

⇒ Sport: Carburetor 17 to 21 mm, improved reed valve. Sport cylinder, original or even reinforced crankshaft.

⇒ Racing: Carburetor 19 to 32 mm (depending on displacement), big valve reed valve, reinforced high-performance crankshaft recommended.

⇒ High-end: Carburetor 28 to 38 mm, big valve reed valve. Ultra-reinforced crankshaft mandatory.

Care and maintenance

Maintenance depends on exhaust type and finish. Chrome models are generally the most durable and require minimal care. Painted versions age relatively well, but the paint can burn in hot spots – oxidizing areas should be monitored and treated. Raw exhausts should be regularly oiled to prevent corrosion.

In all cases, regularly check gaskets, springs and brackets to ensure sealing and reduce vibrations. For removable silencers, it is recommended to replace the packing wool when the exhaust becomes too loud to maintain full performance and comply with noise regulations.

FAQ - common questions about 50cc exhausts

→ When should an exhaust be replaced? If an exhaust is dented or cracked, performance is impaired and it must be replaced. Noise levels also increase. It is essential to replace the exhaust when increasing displacement to prevent overheating.

→ Can a performance exhaust be used on a stock 50cc engine? Possible, but not recommended – low-end torque is reduced, and overall performance suffers. The exhaust must always be matched to the cylinder.

→ Does the carburetor have to be readjusted when changing the exhaust? Almost always. The main jet in particular should be adjusted to avoid a lean mixture and take full advantage of the engine’s power.
