50cc motorcycle cylinder - the heart of the engine

The cylinder is the heart of every 50cc manual engine. It decides whether the bike delivers real power, revs cleanly, or just runs average. Material, displacement, port timings – every detail matters. But be careful: choosing the right cylinder is only the first step. True performance comes from the complete setup working in harmony: exhaust, carburetor, crankshaft and clutch must all match perfectly. Only when everything works together does the engine reach its full potential.

Most 50cc gearbox mopeds use Minarelli AM6 engines (installed in Rieju MRT, Beta RR, Sherco, Yamaha etc.) or Derbi engines (Euro 2, Euro 3, Euro 4, EBE / EBS, D50B0, used in Derbi, Gilera and even Aprilia from the Piaggio Group). These engines offer enormous potential, provided you know what you are doing.

Cylinder types for 50cc motorcycles - OEM, sport, racing or high-end

Each cylinder has its own profile and intended use, from near-stock replica parts to full-blowb racing machines.

In other words: Sport cylinders are the perfect introduction to tuning, the racing kits are where it gets really serious and the bar is raised, and high-end racing kits are only for pros who know exactly what they're doing and are not afraid to squeeze every last bit of power out of the engine.

50cc cylinders at a glance

⇒ Original 50cc cylinder

Ideal for everyday use. Made from cast iron or aluminum with a two-ring piston. Reliable, low-maintenance, and fuel-efficient. Perfect for riders who prioritize durability over peak performance.

⇒ Sport cylinder
Adds more punch without much effort. Available in cast iron or aluminum, with single- or two-ring pistons. Provides better acceleration and torque while remaining highly reliable. For optimal performance, we recommend fitting an entry-level performance exhaust and a slightly larger carburetor.

⇒ Racing cylinder
Developed for competition and high-performance setups. Significantly more torque and peak power, but requires technical expertise and reinforced components, especially the crankshaft and clutch. Exhaust and carburetor must also match the setup.

⇒ High-end racing cylinder
Top level performance. Fully aluminum with a single-ring piston for maximum power and responsiveness. Requires regular maintenance, professional installation, and compatible high-end components. All parts (crankshaft, exhaust, carburetor, clutch, gearbox, etc.) must be able to handle the increased output.

Note: Racing and high-end configurations are intended exclusively for the race track or competition. Only OEM and some sports kits are approved for road use.

The right cylinder for every use

Whether on the way to school, weekend trips or chasing lap times on the race track - there is the right cylinder for AM6 and Derbi.

Most cylinder kits are supplied complete: Cylinder head, piston, piston rings, circlips and gaskets. Spare parts are available individually, ideal for maintenance or repairs.

50cc tuning - setup and performance

This is where things get serious. To get the best performance from a 50cc Supermoto or Enduro bike, every component has to fit. A sports exhaust, reinforced crankshaft, properly tuned carburettor, optimized ignition and a racing clutch capable of handling extra power. Only a perfectly synchronized setup delivers true performance.

Overview Component combinations:

  • Standard setup: Standard cylinders with homologated components ensure reliable, balanced performance.
  • Sport setup: Slightly larger carburetor (17.5-28 mm) and sports exhaust such as Yasuni R1 or Stage6 Streetrace provide more pulling power. If the displacement remains at 50 cc, the original crankshaft can continue to be used, but a reinforced model offers more safety. A reinforced crankshaft is essential for any increase in displacement.
  • Racing setups : Larger carburetors (19-34 mm) and racing exhausts such as Yasuni R2/R3 or Polini Evo are mandatory. A reinforced crankshaft is not optional, but necessary, and a reinforced clutch is also essential.
  • High-end setups: Maximum performance. Large carburetors (24-38 mm), high-end performance exhausts like Stage6 R/T or 2Fast, reinforced crankshaft, ultra-strong clutch and racing ignition are required to ensure maximum performance over the entire RPM range.

Note: Carburetor size and exhaust volume are guidelines and must always match the engine’s displacement and model series. A 50cc racing kit does not require the same carburetor or exhaust as an 88cc sport cylinder.

FAQ: Common 50cc tuning Questions

Among tuners, technical questions are part of everyday life. Here we answer the hottest topics in the community to help you tune your bike to perfection.

→ How to adjust the carburetor?
Main and pilot jets control the fuel mixture at high and low RPM. Needle position affects mid-range performance. Fine adjustments are done via the air or mixture screw. Use the spark plug color as a reference: ideal is light brown / tan.

→ Which parts increase performance?
Exhaust, cylinder and carburetor have the greatest impact. Complete kits, e.g. from Stage6, make the selection easier and ensure a noticeable increase in performance.

→ Ideal compression ratio and squish clearance?
For road use with 50cc cylinders: 0.8-1.0 mm squish and 11:1 compression ratio are proven values. For track use, squish can be reduced to 0.6-0.7 mm and the compression ratio increased to up to 13:1.
