Intake manifold

The intake pipe, sometimes called the intake manifold (especially on multi-cylinder engines), connects the carburetor or throttle valve to the engine:

  • On the cylinder head for 4-stroke engines
  • On the cylinder or directly in the lower engine on 2-stroke engines

Often made of soft rubber, pipes tend to dry out and harden over time. You need to keep an eye on its condition, as a cracked, porous pipe causes air to enter, making the mixture too lean. The risk of breakdown is high!
Some vehicle models feature aluminum pipes. These are fitted with gaskets, which must also be in perfect condition to avoid air ingress.

On motocross bikes and 4-stroke maxiscooters (which are already designed for high performance), it's usually sufficient to fit a replica of the original pipe. Even in the case of preparation, the carburettor diameter is rarely increased, as it is sufficient.

Pipes for preparation

Scooters, mopeds and 50cc motorcycles, as well as classic 2-stroke maxiscooters and Vespas, are not designed for performance. That's why many riders prepare their engines by fitting larger-diameter carburetors. above a certain diameter, you need an intake pipe with a larger diameter.
