Safety First: the brake

The brake system is a component of crucial importance. Its job is to bring a moving vehicle to a stop in the shortest possible distance. It consists of a lever or a pedal, a cable or a brake line, and a brake caliper or a drum. On two-wheelers, there are generally two types of brake systems: disc brakes and drum brakes.

Quick overview of how brakes work

How a drum brake works

The drum brake works on a simple principle: on the outside there is a drum, and the brake shoes press against it from the inside. Pulling the brake lever actuates the cable, which in turn presses the brake shoes against the brake drum at the wheel hub. Friction slows down the drum and therefore the wheel directly connected to it.

How a disc brake works

The disc brake usually works via a hydraulic system: the brake master cylinder / brake pump on the handlebar is connected to the brake caliper via a brake line (usually braided steel). Operating the brake lever applies pressure to the piston in the master cylinder, which is transmitted through the brake fluid to the pistons in the brake caliper. These then press the brake pads against the brake disc. The resulting friction stops the vehicle. Disc brakes offer a few advantages:

  • Less sensitive to moisture
  • Better heat dissipation
  • Better modulation of braking force
  • Easier maintenance

More power = stronger brake

As a rule, when an engine is tuned, stronger brakes are also recommended. Safety should always be kept in mind, because with the same brake setup the following rule applies:

  • Higher speed = longer stopping distance

Increasing braking performance therefore shortens the stopping distance.

Higher braking performance also has advantages in racing, because the rider has to use less effort and can brake later and harder at the same time. This means lap times can be improved not only on a single lap, but over the entire race distance.

Regular maintenance of the brake system

Brake shoes or brake pads wear due to friction. Pads made of organic material or sintered metal wear out and need to be replaced regularly. In general: the more sporty the pad compound is designed to be, the more bite it has, but the faster it wears. With intensive use, even more attention has to be paid to the condition of the pads. Brake discs (and drums) wear more slowly, but their thickness should still be checked regularly. The minimum thickness is usually engraved directly on them. If that is not the case, the owner’s manual of the two-wheeler should be consulted.

In addition, brake fluid needs to be changed regularly.
